Department of Aging Services

Since 1974, the NACOLG Department of Aging Services has helped older adults throughout Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Marion and Winston Counties access resources that support independence, dignity and quality of life.

Designated by the Alabama Department of Senior Services as the region’s Area Agency on Aging (AAA), NACOLG coordinates programs and services that address the needs of adults age 60 and older. We also help people with disabilities, family members and caregivers connect with appropriate assistance.

Through federal, state and local support, we bring together services that help Northwest Alabama residents remain active in their communities, understand their options and plan for changing needs.

What Does the Area Agency on Aging Do?

NACOLG works with community partners, service providers, local leaders and volunteers to:

  • Advocate for older adults and help protect their independence and dignity.

  • Identify needs across our five-county region and plan services to address them.

  • Coordinate programs that support older adults at home and in their communities.

  • Manage resources that fund aging services and improve access to assistance.

  • Help individuals and families find information and make informed decisions about care.

Help Starts With the Aging and Disability Resource Center

Finding the right assistance can feel overwhelming. NACOLG’s Aging and Disability Resource Center provides a starting point for older adults, people with disabilities, families and caregivers.

Our staff can explain available programs, connect you with local resources and help you navigate healthcare and social services. You do not need to know which program you need before contacting us.

Programs and Services

NACOLG connects residents with assistance through:

  • Senior Centers: Opportunities for social connection, activities and community involvement.

  • Elderly Nutrition Program: Meal services that support older adults’ nutritional needs.

  • Alabama Cares: Education, resources and support for family caregivers.

  • Ombudsman Program: Advocacy for residents of long-term care facilities.

  • Senior Employment Program: Training and employment support for eligible older adults.

  • SenioRx: Prescription assistance for eligible individuals.

  • SHIP/SMP: Medicare counseling and education about healthcare fraud.

  • Medicaid Waiver: In-home support for eligible individuals who might otherwise need nursing home care.
